Abstract. Hob milling is one of the most complex machining processes. It is used at the mostly in operation of serration of spur wheels thanks to the high productivity of the process. Complicated cinematic and geometric relations between gear hob and work-piece raise some problems which disable optimal use of the tool and the machine. Optimization of working processes is based on reliable mathematical formulas which define the process in dependence on its parameters. In this paper, reliable tool life function of gear hob in the dependence on geometric parameters using a genetic algorithm was determined.
