Abstract. Tribological systems are complex systems which require a multi-disciplinary (mechanical, material, physico-chemical) approach. To characterize a contact-pair, the intrinsic parameters of the material, as well as the parameters arising from contact loading and surrounding environment need to be taken into account. The approach of a certain fretting type by means of the running condition fretting maps (RCFM) allows the behavior of contacting materials to be taken into account and also to predict if the type of degradation will be bulk (fatigue) or surface (wear). This paper investigates the fretting of a steel/polycarbonate couple. The choice of certain trail parameters as influencing factors allows a complete factorial experiment approach to be performed.
